"Climate Voices – A Science Speakers Network" will be launched this spring as a new initiative of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and the United Nations Foundation. The goal is to bring scientists and their local communities together for real dialogue on climate science that speaks to citizens’ current and future well-being and responsibility as members of a community and democracy. Materials for context-setting presentations will be offered, as will coaching regarding how to begin conversations about climate change with fellow citizens. Venues for such conversations will be local institutions such as service organizations (Rotary, for example), faith-based institutions, chambers of commerce, etc.
If you are interested in volunteering for this network, please create an online profile. Profiles will “go public” when the full web site is launched in about a month. Once you create a profile, you will be kept up to date on Climate Voices progress, including construction of the full web site, availability of presentation materials, webinar coaching, and plans for project launch.
The Space Weather Workshop brings together researchers, service providers, and users from industry, academia, and government agencies in the nation's leading conference on all issues relating to space weather. The 14th annual workshop is scheduled for April 8–11 in Boulder.
The conference addresses the remarkably diverse impacts of space weather on today's technology, highlighting space weather impacts in several areas, including communications, navigation, spacecraft operations, aviation, and electric power. Presentations and discussions will focus on identifying the highest-priority needs for operational services that can guide future research and identifying new high-value capabilities that can be transitioned into operations.
Researchers will have the opportunity to discuss relevant research in many areas of the space environment. Recent progress in large-scale modeling efforts will be featured, along with new developments in Sun-to-Earth coupled modeling systems.
NCAR's Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) invites NSF-supported university researchers in the atmospheric, oceanic, and related sciences to submit large allocation requests for the Yellowstone system by April 7. All requesters are strongly encouraged to review the instructions at https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/chap before preparing their submissions.
For the Yellowstone system, computational requests greater than 200,000 core-hours are considered "large." Smaller requests for up to 200,000 core-hours are accepted any time and are typically reviewed within two business days; visit the allocations web page for details.The large requests will be reviewed by the CISL High-performance computing Allocations Panel (CHAP), and there must be a direct linkage between the researcher's NSF award and the computational research being proposed.
Note that CISL is also accepting submissions for Climate Simulation Laboratory (CSL) projects with a March 24 deadline. Both opportunities are open to eligible university researchers, but in general interested groups should apply to only one opportunity. Allocations will be made on Yellowstone, NCAR's 1.5-petaflops IBM iDataPlex system, the data analysis and visualization clusters (Geyser and Caldera), the 11-PB GLADE disk resource, and the HPSS archive.

The AMS Summer Policy Colloquium brings a cohort of about 40 earth and atmospheric scientists from academia, government, and the private sector to Washington, D.C. for an intense, ten-day immersion in science policy. The colloquium also offers visits to Capitol Hill, hands-on workshops, and case studies of current issues in Earth and atmospheric sciences. A limited amount of financial support from NSF available to graduate students and faculty based on a national competition.
NCAR’s 2013 Annual Report, now available online, provides highlights of research accomplishments as well as insights on the people, tools, and facilities at NCAR that are advancing research efforts both nationally and globally. The report also links to the seven annual reports from NCAR laboratories and programs, featuring in-depth coverage on research and collaboration from the past year.

An Introduction to Observing Oil from Helicopters and Planes
This lesson teaches aircrews how to identify, describe, and report spills using specific terminology. Misidentifying natural events as oil spills is a common, and sometimes expensive, mistake. This lesson also points out common false positives when trying to identify oil spills.
Basics of Visible and Infrared Remote Sensing
This lesson presents the scientific and technical basis for using visible and infrared satellite imagery so forecasters can make optimal use of it for observing and forecasting the behavior of the atmosphere. Review of remote sensing and radiative transfer theory through a series of conceptual models is also presented.
An Introduction to the Downscaled Climate and Hydrology Projections Website
This website, the result of a collaboration between several federal and non-federal partners, provides access to downscaled climate and hydrology projections for the contiguous United States and parts of Canada and Mexico, derived from contemporary global climate models.
Writing TAFs for Convective Weather, 2nd Edition
This module uses a severe thunderstorm event to illustrate techniques for producing an effective Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) following current National Weather Service directives. It also addresses the importance of maintaining an effective TAF weather watch and updating the TAF proactively.
