weather forecasting systems for ground transportation systems; improving forecasting for wind energy farms

Trained in aeronautics and atmospheric science, Mahoney applies his research and development expertise to decision support systems for surface transportation agencies and power companies. Mahoney has helped design the winter road Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS) and the Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS), which use detailed meteorological information to assist state transportation officials in maintaining roads during inclement weather. He also heads up an initiative to provide utilities with detailed wind forecasts to enable them to increase their use of wind energy. Another focus for Mahoney is the use of wireless communications systems to alert drivers to nearby hazards.
