Precip moves Up the Hill to the top of the hill

Though the races were cancelled, the celebration was not

September 11, 2012 | The weather last Friday turned NCAR’s annual Up the Hill Race into an uphill battle for the Employee Activities Committee, but an afternoon drizzle could never rain on the parade of determined EAC volunteers and Event Services staff. Runners, bikers, and spectators took on the post-race celebration with enthusiasm.

Coworkers socialized as they enjoyed live entertainment from the Craig Maierhofer Trio, food and drinks, and the tranquil setting of a dewy afternoon on the NCAR Tree Plaza.

The camaraderie was evident as scientists, technical staff, engineers, administrative staff, and folks with other job descriptions enjoyed the get-together. As someone new to NCAR and UCAR, this reporter noticed the sense of pride as staff discussed their love for the organization and the rewarding nature of their work. Will Wieder, a postdoc in ISP & CGD said, “To me it’s just kind of magical, the level of work that happens here—it’s not something that happens anywhere else.”

The runners and bicyclists may have not crossed a literal finish line during Friday’s race, but an obvious sense of accomplishment and celebration was in the air as the rain fell into the afternoon. In fact, as the party came to a close, people parted ways under the promising sign of a rainbow.
