January 24, 2011 | Researchers who use Google Earth, the virtual globe, map, and geographical information program, just got a boost from the company, which has granted UCAR/NCAR a number of free Google Earth Pro licenses for use by staff. The licenses are part of Google Earth Outreach, which supports nonprofit organizations on issues affecting local regions or the entire globe.
January 24, 2011 | Staff who fly the friendly skies can also now fly the open skies. Due to a recent change in federal regulations, UCAR can take advantage of “Open Skies” agreements that allow for travel using government funds on some foreign air carriers.

December 22, 2010 | As part of the UCAR/NCAR’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a time capsule centered on the theme “What was life like in 2010 at UCAR/NCAR?” has been filled with more than 90 items that provide a snapshot of the organization. The items range from an all-staff photo taken at last year’s fall party to a 32-bit communication board to a copy of NCAR’s Twitter page.

December 14, 2010 | Staff rang in the holidays and celebrated each other's accomplishments at the 2010 UCAR Awards Ceremony and Holiday Party, held at Center Green on December 10.
November 22, 2010 | On September 6, the Boulder County Communications Center received a radio call at about 10:00 a.m. of a fire in Fourmile Canyon. High winds helped spread the blaze, and within a week, 6,181 acres had been consumed along with 169 homes in what was the most expensive wildfire in Colorado’s history.
November 16, 2010 | The Mesa Mile construction project, which ran from early August through early November, was nearly as smooth as the new asphalt that’s now on the road. Staff and the public are enjoying the bike and pedestrian paths along the roadway, as well as a new parking lot surface and lighting at the Mesa Lab.
November 16, 2010 | Rumors of the discontinuation of the Delphi Service found their way to the Staff Notes office. We’d like to clarify that these rumors are exactly that—rumors—as Delphi is alive and well. It simply hasn’t received any publishable questions as of late. (Occasionally, certain questions are not published at the questioner’s request.)
November 16, 2010 | On October 5, the UCAR Board of Trustees surprised Rick Anthes and 400 other attendees at the organization’s 50th anniversary dinner by announcing a new name for 3375 Mitchell Lane: the Anthes Building. The announcement left Rick speechless. “I thought the board might be giving me a gift of some kind, but I never expected anything like this, ever,” he says.
November 17, 2010 | A cross section of UCAR/NCAR retirees, veteran staff, and university faculty converged on the CU Stadium Club on October 5 to celebrate UCAR/NCAR’s 50th anniversary. The dinner was scheduled to coincide with the annual meeting of UCAR member and affiliate representatives, most of whom joined the celebration.
November 3, 2010 | A new round of online, interactive educational modules from COMET’s MetEd program covers a variety of geophysical phenomena for professionals, students, and science enthusiasts. Modules are free but require registration.
