HAO Colloquium Series presents Irina Thaler, Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE FOR THIS COLLOQUIUM HAS BEEN MOVED FROM THE ORIGINAL DATE OF JULY 29 TO THURSDAY, JULY 31.

Time:  3:00–4:00 pmDate:  Thursday, July 31, 2014Location:  CG1 – 2139 Captain Mary (no webcast or recording will be available)Title: Magnetic Phenomena on the Solar Surface using 3D radiative MHD simulationsAbstract:In my talk, I will concentrate on the investigation of magnetic phenomena on the solar surface using the realistic 3D MHD simulation code STAGGER. I will touch upon three different topics, mainly focusing on the estimation of the brightness contribution of the strong magnetic field component present in the quiet Sun. Since a possible long term variation of the quiet Sun magnetic field is under debate, a good estimate of the brightness contribution could help to evaluate its potential influence on the Earth’s climate. The second part will focus on the question of existence of local dynamo processes on the solar surface, and in the third, we look at how subsurface processes influence the time scaleof magnetic flux cancellation in active regions.
