In an effort to simplify wireless access for our visitors, guests, and staff with personal devices, there will be a new unencrypted wireless network called "UCAR Visitor" available on Monday, December 18th at all UCAR sites.  Rather than use a weekly password to access the network, guests, visitors, or staff may enter their name and email address to gain short or long term access.

Additionally on December 18th, neither the "UCAR VPN" nor the "UCAR Guest" wireless networks will be available at any UCAR site.  Please direct visitors and guests to the "UCAR Visitor" wireless network. UCAR staff have the option of enrolling on the "UCAR Visitor" network or else working with their IT staff to enroll on the "eduroam" network.  The "eduroam" network has the additional advantages of being both encrypted and also available at other participating labs and educational institutions across the globe.

For any questions related to this change, please send email to

A rich, new data set is giving scientists an unprecedented look at the future of weather. Nicknamed CONUS 1 by its creators, the data set is enormous. To generate it, the researchers ran the NCAR-based Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) at an extremely high resolution (4 kilometers, or about 2.5 miles) across the entire contiguous United States for a total of 26 simulated years: half in the current climate and half in the future climate expected if society continues on its current trajectory. The next cohort of UCAR|NCAR Equity and inclusION (UNEION) training is starting at the end of January! To date, more than 60 colleagues at our organization have participated in this training experience. In a post-UNEION survey one participant stated “I believe what I have learned from the UNEION classes make me not only a better employee, but also a better citizen... (NCAR|UCAR) should be proud that UNEION is making a crucial societal impact.”

This is a unique learning opportunity to join a cohort of your colleagues in discussion, readings, and activities that will broaden your understanding of ways in which various identities can affect our experiences in society and the workplace. UNEION is a four-part training series with a new topic covered each meeting and there is about 2-3 hours of preparation work before each session. You must register for ALL FOUR sessions to participate.

To register please log into the Connect Website. Select the link titled "View the EOD Training Calendar and Register for Courses" and search for “UNEION”.

We look forward to having another invested cohort engage in the UNEION curriculum. If you have questions or need more information please contact Kristen Luna Aponte.

The solar seasons — which change every six to 18 months from "bursty" to quiet, and vice versa — have been realistically simulated for the first time in a computer model of the Sun's shear layer beneath the turbulent outer shell, an advance that promises the ability to predict these seasonal fluctuations nearly a year in advance.
