Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Atmospheric Flow
In this talk we present higher order discontinuous Galerkin methods for convection dominated problems (using a limiter based stabilization) or diffusion dominated problems. A comparison of these methods with COSMO, a well established dynamical core for weather forecast, using standard test cases for atmospheric flow is presented.
This talk also highlights implementation aspects of DG methods, in particular we comment on asynchronous communication and implementation of the DG kernel, as well as techniques to allows for local grid adaptivity even in parallel environments. In this case dynamic load-balancing is applied to maintain scalability of the simulation code.
The DG implementation is based on the open source software framework DUNE.
