The new President's Strategic Initiative Fund provides seed funding for promising interdisciplinary scientific research across the whole of the organization. Awards are made to incentivize transformational science across NCAR, UCP, and/or with UCAR Member Institutions. Successful submissions will outline new activities likely to lead to future external funding.

Proposals (approximately five pages) will be accepted through close of business on November 16, 2017, with a target start date of January 2018 for a one-year performance period.

The Denver-Boulder AMS chapter would like to call your attention to this new AMS fund, which our chapter is gladly supporting.

The "Winds of Change For Students" Fund has been established by Marshall Shepherd through the American Meteorological Society. As many of you know, Dr. Shepherd is an AMS past-president and distinguished professor at the University of Georgia.

The 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season has caused hardship for students in parts of the Caribbean, Texas, and Florida. This fund is established to assist students from affected regions that may want to attend the AMS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas in 2018.

Numerous reports have documented that meteorological-research-instructional programs, particularly in Puerto Rico, have been adversely affected, and students need support. Dr. Shepherd initiated the fund with an initial donation of $1000 with the hope that others would contribute in helping reverse winds of fortune for these students in the same way that winds change as the eye of a hurricane passes.

If you would like to contribute to the fund, please contact Stephanie Armstrong at AMS headquarters (armstrong@ametsoc.org). All donations to AMS are tax deductible.

ACOM SEMINAR SERIES

TITLE: Parameterization of Blue Jets and lightnings in WACCM: Frequency and chemical impact of atmospheric electricity phenomena

SPEAKERS: Francisco J. Pérez-Invernón and Francisco J. Gordillo-Vázquez
Instituto De Astrofisica De Andalucia
Granada, Andalucia, Spain

ABSTRACT: We will present the results of our ongoing work about four different parameterization of lightning and Blue Jets in WACCM. Blue Jets are 20 km tall stratospheric electrical discharges taking place in the stratosphere from the bottom of the cloud top as a consequence of lightning. It is known that lightning are an important source of tropospheric NOx. In addition, Blue Jets can generate stratospheric NOx, N2O, O and other chemical species. In this seminar, we will comment on the global frequency and possible global chemical influence of both Blue Jets and lightning in the atmosphere of the Earth. Finally, we will compare our calculations with available lightning flash frequency observed by satellites and with some of the latest NOx measurements.

A Hurricane WRF Tutorial will be held on January 23-25, 2018 at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD. This will be a three-day event organized by the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) and by the NOAA Environmental Modeling Center (EMC). The Hurricane Weather Research and Forecast system (HWRF) is a coupled atmosphere-ocean model suitable for tropical cyclone (TC) research and forecasting in all Northern and Southern Hemisphere ocean basins.

Tutorial participants can expect to hear lectures on all aspects of HWRF, including model physics and dynamics, nesting, initialization, coupling with the ocean, postprocessing, and vortex tracking. Additionally, enrichment lectures on HWRF's multistorm capability, TC verification, HWRF ensemble system, and NCEP's future plans for TC numerical weather prediction will be presented. Practical sessions will give tutorial participants hands-on experience in running HWRF.

Date: January 23-25, 2018
