Joyce Gellhorn, a former director of NCAR’s Project LEARN, passed away on July 27th, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Project LEARN (Laboratory Experience in Atmospheric Research at NCAR) was NCAR’s inaugural teacher enhancement program and brought teachers from across the U.S. for professional development. Over the course of three years teachers worked closely with scientists and developed curricular materials for middle and high school on climate and weather topics. Joyce came to NCAR in 1991 after a lengthy career as a science educator at Boulder High School. She was known to teachers in the LEARN project and scientists alike for her passion for the environment and education to build science literacy.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station on Sunday, August 12, from 1 to 3 PM. Donations to the Nature Conservancy, Boulder County Nature Association Education Program, or Family Hospice may be given in her name.
