Pioneering NCAR researcher Nancy Knight, most recently with NESL/MMM, died on 26 June after a short illness. Nancy came to NCAR in 1962 and worked as a staff scientist and casual employee throughout much of the last 49 years. During her long and varied career, Nancy examined the behavior of hailstones and ice crystals, including the processes that lead to their formation and growth. She often collaborated with her husband, Charlie Knight, and with Andy Heymsfield, both in NESL/MMM.
Nancy's work on verifying record-sized hailstones was profiled in Staff Notes in 2003 (http://www.ucar.edu/communications/staffnotes/0308/hail.html), and a related story appeared in UCAR Magazine in 2010 (http://www2.ucar.edu/magazine/features/all-hail).
More on Nancy's life and work will appear in a forthcoming Staff Notes tribute. Those who would like to honor Nancy's legacy may contribute to a fund in her name established at the Boulder Valley Humane Society.
