EOL/ACD Seminar - Slicing the Atmosphere: Global Sources of Greenhouse Gases and Pollutants from Fine-Grained, Pole-to-Pole Observations

Global measurements and models of atmospheric gases and aerosols typically utilize data from remote stations and/or satellites that are smoothed or sparse in space and time. The resulting representations of global atmospheric composition do not resolve the sharp vertical and horizontal gradients that characterize the real atmosphere, and thus at best describe a mean condition that never actually exists, and at worst may suffer from significant unrecognized bias. In order to critically test model transport and source distributions, the HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations (HIPPO) experiment has obtained six fine-grained, global scale measurements of a comprehensive suite of trace gases, aerosols, and black carbon, with four more planned for this summer. The data help to distinguish deficiencies in our knowledge of sources and sinks from errors due to model structure and simulation of transport.  This seminar introduces the HIPPO data set to the public, and discusses preliminary results for principal greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, CO, N2O) and reactive species (O3, CO), plus selected halocarbons, hydrocarbons, and black carbon.
