Vic Tisone - a Tribute

HAO staff are deeply saddened to tell you of the sudden passing of our dear friend and long-time colleague, Vic Tisone.  Vic passed away at Boulder Community Hospital on Thursday, July 14th after a short fight with pancreatic cancer. Vic began working at NCAR in 1968. Vic had spent some time at CU working a toward a physics degree.  When he chose work over school, the local employment office offered him two choices – a job unloading boxcars of lumber, or working at NCAR in Boulder. A native Boulderite, Vic chose NCAR and the rest is history. Vic came to work for Sydney Chapman and Jagdish Gupta, who was a postdoc at HAO at the time.  After 46 years of dedication and hard work to our organization, Vic retired from NCAR/HAO in early 2015 as a Software Engineer III.

Vic was dearly loved by many people throughout the organization and the community. The response to his passing has been overwhelming. Vic was quick with a joke and smile, generous with his support of staff and visitors, and is generally the one guy that thousands of HAO visitors and students he worked with never seem to forget. Vic enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, and shortly after retiring was able to take a trip to Hawaii to enjoy the game. It should also be noted that Vic was on the golf course just three weeks before he fell ill. Also, Vic was an artist.  Long-time employee of NCAR/UCAR, Ben Domenico, reflected recently that Vic made sketches of two of his children when they were small.  He also enjoyed painting and hoped to spend more time on some of these projects after retirement.

Vic was a father, husband and grandfather. To HAO and NCAR he was a colleague, a friend, and in so many ways, a role model for how to live – with lots of fun and laughter and always, always, keeping things light.

Vic’s wife, Phyllis, has organized memorial services on Wednesday, July 27 on the NCAR tree plaza at 4:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
