EOL Seminar Series: Matthew Mayernick

Please join us Tuesday, August 8th, for the EOL Seminar, "EarthCollab: Enabling Scientific Collaboration and Discovery Through Linked Scientific Resources," presented by Matthew Mayernick of NCAR. The seminar will be held in the Foothills Small Seminar Room (FL2-1001) at 3:30 pm.

ABSTRACT: The EarthCollab project is developing technology to facilitate the discovery of research products (such as data and publications), and to support the development of new collaborations around shared tools, instruments, facilities, and research topics. Scientific projects increasingly involve many distributed participants, digital communications, information sharing, and heterogeneous products. These complex projects present a number of challenges related to data and information management. The EarthCollab project focuses on two geoscience-based case studies: 1) An interdisciplinary field program, the Bering Sea Project, whose data archive is hosted by NCAR’s Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL), and 2) Diverse research projects informed by geodetic tools, such as GPS networks and LiDAR imagery, which are operated and/or maintained by UNAVCO. This presentation will discuss EarthCollab's use of VIVO, an open -source semantic web software suite, as the underlying technology to connect the people and resources within research communities, and enable researchers to more easily find people, organizations, and research resources that are relevant to their work.
