Denver-Boulder American Meteorological Society: GOES Satellite Applications in the Tropics

The Denver-Boulder AMS chapter will be hosting Andrea Schumacher from the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere/Colorado State University. Please join us for a discussion on the new capabilities of GOES-R/GOES-16 for real-time tropical cyclone analysis and monitoring!

The new GOES-16 satellite, which has provided preliminary imagery since early summer, is already contributing significantly to improved hurricane track and intensity forecasts. The GOES-16 advanced baseline imager provides dramatic new views of tropical cyclone phenomena and offers vastly improved time and spatial resolution as well as color composite images to enhance cloud bands and other features. Andrea will also explore the role of the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) in helping identify areas of strong thunderstorms associated with tropical cyclone intensification.
