Register for LAOF workshop at AGU Fall Meeting
A morning workshop at the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco will introduce participants to the NSF Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities (LAOF) and provide a clear roadmap on how to request these facilities in support of scientific field campaigns and educational activities. Facility managers and experienced users of LAOF will provide information, guidance and advice on how to incorporate available instruments and platforms into an experiment design, what steps need to be taken to request one or more of these facilities, and how to maximize the success of a campaign.
This workshop is aimed at early-career faculty and researchers who require high-quality observations (in-situ and remote sensing) to understand and describe aspects of the Earth system but are not familiar with the suite of observational research platforms and services available through the five NSF LAOF partner organizations. The course will also be of interest to teachers and students who are interested in using a subset of these systems for educational purposes, such as short-term, hands-on instructions and instrument demonstrations as part of a college course.

SOARS now accepting applications for summer 2014
UCAR’s Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS) is an undergraduate-to-graduate bridge program for students interested in the atmospheric and related sciences. It provides up to four years of paid summer research experience, strong mentoring, community support, and funding for conferences, undergraduate and graduate education. SOARS participants spend the summer in Boulder at NCAR and partnering laboratories on projects matched to their interests and skills.
SOARS invites students from many disciplines, including meteorology, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, ecology, and the social sciences. In particular, SOARS seeks to involve students from groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences, including those who are black or African-American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Hispanic or Latino, female, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities. SOARS welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students; students who have experienced, and worked to overcome, educational or economic disadvantage; and students who have personal or family circumstances that may complicate their continued progress in research careers.
Enhanced Science Literacy Maps from NSDL
UCAR's National Science Digital Library has improved its popular NSDL Science Literacy Maps, a tool that enables mapping of concepts in K-12 learning based on the AAAS Benchmarks for Science Literacy. These maps are a valuable tool both for curriculum planning and for finding and incorporating online resources for blended learning. State departments of education, teachers, curriculum developers, and content providers are all working to gain understanding of the complexities of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), released in April 2013. Enhanced NSDL services include:
- Improvements to the Science Literacy Maps that provide greater speed and efficiency in map loading, improved readability, and accuracy in map renderin
- Addition of an NGSS tab in the maps' "information bubble" that connects the concept(s) of a AAAS Benchmark to NGSS via a "crosswalk" between the two sets of learning goals (see example).
- Addition of the NGSS to NSDL's Standards Browse feature, which enables users to explore the NGSS elements and find NSDL resources associated with them

SUPER seeking applicants for summer 2014
The NCAR/EOL Summer Undergraduate Program for Engineering Research (SUPER) gives interns experience in helping to develop new instrumentation and improve the existing suite of NSF/NCAR Lower Atmospheric Observing Facilities. Interns are encouraged to develop their own engineering solutions as they work with, and are mentored by, professional, experienced engineers and technicians. During the internship, interns have access to a large number of resources, such as sophisticated testing and calibration instruments, technical documentation, and state-of-the art fabrication capabilities.
Undergraduate students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities are eligible to apply for SUPER internships. EOL's mission primarily requires skills in electrical, mechanical, optical, and computer engineering, but we encourage all engineering students to apply. The 2014 SUPER program will run from mid-May through early August.

Call for abstracts: World Weather Open Science Conference 2014
The inaugural World Weather Open Science Conference, scheduled for August 16-21, 2014, in Montréal, Canada, is now accepting abstracts. Online registration is also open. This groundbreaking conference will bring together the entire global weather science and user communities for the first time to review the state of the art and map out scientific frontiers for the next decade and beyond. The conference is co-organized by the World Meteorological Organization, the International Council of Scientific Unions, Environment Canada, the National Research Council Canada, and UCAR.

Forecasting Fog for Aviation: Kenya Case Study
This new lesson, part of the African Satellite Meteorology Education & Training series, aims to improve aviation forecasts of fog in the African airspace by teaching forecasters to make more accurate forecasts using satellite imagery, numerical weather prediction, and other available data. A process for diagnosing and forecasting fog is presented and applied to a case over the Nairobi, Kenya region.
