I understood there was to be a fitness center built at Center Green
someday. (Actually, I was told there would be one in 2005.) Can you tell me
if UCAR plans to ever have a fitness center at this campus?

Our plans to start a UCAR bowling team may be adversely affected if what I
hear is true—that the Employee Activities Committee (EAC) is no longer
partially funding UCAR employees' team entry fees.

In the parlance of our times, what's the deal? Is the EAC no longer
partially funding running, biking, or what-have-you teams?

I apologize if I sound like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie
and wants to know what's going on, but I have no frame of reference here.

Many of us would like to know why there is no American flag flying at the
Center Green campus. We feel that, as an American institution funded
primarily by government dollars, the flag should be prominently displayed.

I would like to ask you about UCAR's Equal Employment Opportunity policy.
The policy manual lists both sexual orientation and marital status as
protected characteristics. Is that interpreted to include polyamorous
individuals? (If you don't know what polyamory is, Wikipedia's explanation
is pretty good.)

I am in a same-sex triad relationship. Basically, I have two domestic
partners. The three of us live together and it's pretty much just like a
conventional two-person union (same-sex or not), except there are three of

I have noticed that some UCAR employees routinely park in the stalls
designated for visitors, no matter the availability of other empty parking
stalls. Isn't this contrary to UCAR policy?

Why is the basketball court at Foothills Lab now covered with trailers? A
group of NCAR employees was meeting regularly at lunchtime (weather
permitting, of course) for a friendly game, but had to stop once the
trailers filled the court. Are there plans to remove them in the near future?

I just hung up on my second computer-generated phone solicitation of the
week (and it is Tuesday). The solicitations tend to be for either
"refinances" or "new satellite TV services."

I know that other staff members are also bothered by this. I am really
tired of dealing with it. Can't we as an institution be put on a "do not
call" list or have an option added to our phone service saying, "If you are
a solicitor, please put us on your ‘do not call list' and hang up,
otherwise dial one to connect"? Or perhaps NCAR has a better way?

It is difficult or impossible to get UCAR/NCAR to sponsor membership in
professional organizations or societies.

According to the "Guidelines for Sponsored Memberships," found here,
approval for individual memberships will be considered on a case-by-case
basis by the appropriate member of the President's Council. This is a
process most people will choose not to undergo. Thus, one has to pay for
these professional memberships out-of-pocket. When I attend a conference
sponsored by the professional society to which I have purchased a

I work at Foothills Lab and I have noticed that the custodial staff
apparently throws away a half-full roll of toilet paper at least twice a
week. The dispensers are designed to completely use up the first roll
before the second rolls drops down into place. For some reason, the
custodians remove the first roll when it is still half full of paper and
the backup roll is never used.

They also replace the paper towel rolls when not nearly empty, usually
leaving the half roll on the counter nearby to get wet and wasted and to be

Is there anything that can be done about the disregard for the 3-way stop
at the entrance to the FL campus? As a witness to, and near victim of, some
UCAR staffers blowing through the stop sign in their cars, I know there is
an accident waiting to happen. The parking shortage also contributes to the
safety aspect as the Wild Oats folks park so near the intersection. What
can be done about the safety of this intersection that is used by
bicyclists and pedestrians alike?
