Air Pollution and Air Chemistry
dynamic variability and climatology of the stratosphere, ozone assessments, satellite observations of the transport of trace constituents in the atmosphere

Physicist Bill Randel, NCAR Senior Scientist, uses satellite data and computer models to study large-scale circulation patterns and the movement of chemicals in the atmosphere, with a focus on the stratosphere. His recent work has explored such issues as the influence of climate change on the stratosphere, the impact of the Asian monsoon on the chemistry of the atmosphere, and the exchange of chemicals between the two lowest layers of the atmosphere. He is a lead author on an international ozone assessment expected in 2010. Randel is the director of the NCAR division that studies chemical processes and their impact on climate and air quality, the Atmospheric Chemistry Division.
