Tilmes specializes in the chemistry of the middle atmosphere, with a focus on ozone depletion in the stratosphere. Her research has indicated that certain attempts to offset global warming through geoengineering (artificially cooling the planet by injecting sulfates into the stratosphere to block incoming sunlight) could have the unintended side effect of further depleting the ozone layer. Tilmes is a researcher in NCAR’s Atmospheric Chemistry Division.
