studying the tropopause, a remote atmospheric region that affects global climate

Pan uses research aircraft to study the tropopause, a relatively little-understood region of the atmosphere that lies at the boundary between the troposphere (lower atmosphere) and the stratosphere. This region, which appears to be changing as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, influences global climate by affecting the amount of solar radiation that reaches Earth’s surface. Pan has served as a principal investigator of several field projects focusing on this region, such as START 08.
