Area of expertise
turbulence detection and warning systems for aircraft, clear-air, convective, and mountain-induced turbulence

A nationally recognized expert on the impacts of turbulence and windshear on aircraft, Cornman focuses on developing software systems to alert pilots to potentially dangerous areas of clear-air, in-cloud, and mountain-induced turbulence. He created a turbulence reporting system, used by several airlines, that locates turbulence by applying mathematical formulas to real-time measurements of aircraft movements. Prior to his turbulence work, Cornman specialized in developing systems to steer aircraft away from a potentially deadly type of wind shear known as a microburst.
