societal impacts of weather forecasts and information; environmental and natural resources economics; social sciences

Jeff Lazo is an economist whose background is in the non-market valuation of environmental and natural resources. His research has shown that U.S. adults obtain an estimated 300 billion forecasts each year, with the value Americans place on these forecasts appearing to be far more than the nation spends on public and private weather services. Lazo heads NCAR’s Societal Impacts Program, whose mission is to help society benefit from weather forecasting by integrating social sciences into weather research and policy-making.
