Lawrence studies climate change at northern latitudes, with a focus on permafrost (permanently frozen soil) and other land surface processes. He uses climate models to predict rates of permafrost melt over the coming century, and studies how periods of rapid sea ice loss will affect rates of climate warming over Alaska, Canada, and Russia. Lawrence works in NCAR’s Climate and Global Dynamics Division.
