Staff weigh in on UCAR Sustainability Management Plan

September 15, 2011 | At separate workshops held August 29 and 30 at the Mesa Lab and Center Green, more than 50 staff took part in the early stages of crafting the UCAR/NCAR Sustainability Management Plan (SMP). The plan is intended to reduce costs and enhance staff comfort and wellness, as well as help the organization take a leadership role in the local and scientific communities on efficient building management and overall sustainability.

Up-the-Hill 2011

September 1, 2011 | Staff convened at the Mesa Lab on August 26 to cheer on co-workers in the annual Up-the-Hill Races and enjoy food and drinks on the Tree Plaza.

Remembering Gene Martin

August 31, 2011 | A UCAR leader who traveled the globe for decades, laying the groundwork for atmospheric field projects, has passed from the scene. Gene Martin, director of JOSS, died on August 3 after a brief illness. Gene came to NCAR in 1978 and was a key member of JOSS’s staff for many years. “Gene was well known to scientists throughout the UCAR community for his service and support to the community, “ says Jack Fellows, UCP director. “He will be greatly missed.”

The Anthes Building gets its first residents

August 23, 2011 | On Monday, August 15, staff who normally show up for work at FL4 headed across the street instead and began unpacking boxes in their new offices in the Anthes Building (FLA). A dedication ceremony for the new building is scheduled for August 31 at 8:15 a.m. UCAR president and building namesake Rick Anthes will speak and a light breakfast will be served.

A place of honor

August 17, 2011 | When afternoon sunlight pours into the Damon Room, it now illuminates the names of dozens of high-achieving NCAR scientists. They’re the center of attraction in a new exhibit recently installed along the north wall of the room.

NCAR Awards Wall of Honor

August 5, 2011 | UCAR/NCAR colleagues past and present will gather at the Mesa Lab on Wednesday, August 10, to celebrate the new NCAR Awards Wall of Honor on display in the Damon Room. The gathering will also provide the opportunity to name the organization’s first Distinguished Scholar.

Nancy Knight: The life of a singular scientist

July 26, 2011 | One of NCAR’s keenest analysts and appreciators of ice, snow, and hail has passed from the scene. Nancy Knight, most recently with NESL/MMM, died on 26 June after a short illness. (Watch a three-minute video on Nancy’s life and work.)

HAO balloon takes to the skies

July 17, 2011 | HAO’s HiWind, a balloon-borne instrument that measures winds in the thermosphere, was launched from Esrange, Sweden. It ascended about 26 miles (43 kilometers) into the atmosphere and headed west across the Atlantic Ocean, passing above Greenland on its way to Canada in round-the-clock sunlight. The flight was terminated on June 17 and the payload landed with a parachute descent 300 miles northeast of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.

When waters rise

July 26, 2011 | Heavy rains in the Midwest and a deep Western snowpack led to floods across much of the country this spring and summer. The Lower Mississippi recorded its greatest flood in history, the Missouri River inundated towns and fields, and runoff-swollen Western rivers threatened to jump their banks.
