July 6, 2012 | Fresh faces in the lobbies, lively discussions in the halls, old friendships renewed—it’s summer at NCAR & UCAR, and that means visitors. Hundreds of people attend our colloquia and workshops each year from June to August.
June 25, 2012 | As the weather heats up in June, so do the derailleurs and spinning wheels of Boulder’s avid cycling community. NCAR & UCAR are firmly in the local bike groove, which is especially obvious on Bike to Work Day (see below). It's also evident at 11:45 a.m. each Tuesday, when anywhere from 15 to 40 local cyclists gather in front of FL2 for an informal lunchtime ride. Now a 14-year tradition, these rides cover a wide range of routes across Boulder County, typically lasting a little over an hour each.
June 25, 2012 | A rapt audience heard practical advice, humorous anecdotes, cautionary tales, and other insights from three seasoned experts during the brown-bag seminar Experiences in Building International Partnerships, hosted by the UCAR Asian Circle on June 19 at CG1.
June 19, 2012 | Planning for the next NCAR strategic plan is underway and NCAR director Roger Wakimoto wants broad input from staff and organizational stakeholders.
June 19, 2012 | This year’s active wildfire season has seen a number of steps taken by the county and state to reduce the risk of wildfire, including a statewide ban on open fires. At NCAR and UCAR, security, safety, and facilities staff have also stepped up vigilance, particularly at the Mesa Lab.
June 18, 2012 | Deliveries of the Yellowstone supercomputing system began late last month at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center. As more and more equipment arrives via trucks of all sizes, delivery crews, IBM technicians, and staff from NCAR's Computational and Information Sciences Laboratory are stepping into high gear. More cabinets for computing and for data storage will arrive through the end of this month.
June 14, 2012 | At its May meeting, the UCAR Board of Trustees appointed three new NCAR senior scientists:
Frank Bryan (NESL/CGD)
Hanli Liu (HAO)
Sarah Gibson (HAO)
You’ll find profiles of each of them below.
June 7, 2012 | Telescopes and special glasses were the order of the day on Tuesday, June 5, as staff on several campuses took a peek at Venus passing in front of the Sun—an event that won't be repeated until 2117. See below for a sampling of scenes from Center Green.
May 25, 2012 | Experience the thrill of the chase from your desktop as scientists and observing experts from NCAR (EOL, NESL/ACD, and NESL/MMM) and a host of other labs and universities pursue thunderstorms in Alabama, Colorado, and Oklahoma on the DC3 field campaign during May and June.
Scientists involved in the Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry experiment, or DC3, are blogging, tweeting and posting observations and photos from the field until the end of June.
