November 12, 2008 | In November, CISL announced the arrival of AMSTAR (Augmentation of the Mass Storage Tape Archive Resources). This new digital storage library gives NCAR five times its current storage capacity and enables scientists to conduct increasingly sophisticated computer studies of Earth’s climate.

September 24, 2008 | More than a dozen UCAR/NCAR staff volunteered at the Green Frontier Fest, a celebration of sustainability sponsored by the City of Denver and other supporters on August 24 at Sculpture Park. A booth organized by OGA and EO featured hands-on science demos, items from the Science Store, information about NCAR and our research, and handouts on Sustainable UCAR’s environmental initiatives.

November 11, 2008 | Schoolchildren, families, and citizen scientists around the world gazed skyward after dark from October 20 to November 3 as part of the second Great World Wide Star Count. Their objective was to find specific constellations and then share their observations online. The data they collect helps scientists map light pollution globally, while educating participants about the stars. Approximately 12,471 individuals participated in the count this year, submitting 3,378 observations from all 50 U.S. states and 60 different countries.

September 24, 2008 | Foreign visitors are hardly a rarity at NCAR and UOP, but it’s not every day that a meeting draws 27 participants from 24 countries. COMET’s international hydrometeorological analysis and forecasting course, held June 9–27, brought scientists from every region covered by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to Boulder to learn more about the weather and hydrology behind floods and other water-related hazards.
