UCAR establishes Ombuds Office to assist staff

October 21, 2009 | Staff now have a new avenue for resolving work-related conflicts and discussing sensitive issues: the UCAR Ombuds Office. UCAR president Rick Anthes announced the office's establishment on October 16. "We believe that this is an important 'best practice' in an organization of our size and scope," he told staff. "It gives another avenue to deal with important issues, in addition to our normal policy options."

New fiscal year brings ESSL restructure, management shifts

October 12, 2009 | Three months ago, NCAR director Eric Barron challenged the nearly 300 NCAR staff who have been part of the Earth & Sun Systems Laboratory (ESSL) to define a new laboratory structure that would better enable NCAR science and improve management while maintaining the ability to foster interdisciplinary science.

Visualizing Climate Change: Photo exhibit captures a warming world

October 5, 2009 | A new photo exhibit at the Mesa Lab, "Visualizing Climate Change: The Work of GHG Photos," brings together the work of a handful of photographers dedicated to illustrating Earth's changing climate. The exhibit, which is located on the lab's first floor, is featured until December 31.

UCAR/NCAR calculates its greenhouse gas emissions

October 1, 2009 | In late September, Sustainable UCAR announced preliminary results from the first-ever inventory of UCAR/NCAR's annual greenhouse gas emissions, showing that electricity use is by far the organization's largest source of emissions (about 81%), with business travel in second place at about 12%.

The Arctic heats up

September 24, 2009 | The Arctic is on thin ice—literally as well as figuratively. New research shows that temperatures were warmer there in the 1990s than any decade in at least 2,000 years. Arctic sea ice has been dwindling for the past few decades, with 2009 levels well below normal. Greenland's melting ice sheets have the potential to dramatically raise sea levels, and thawing permafrost threatens to release massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere.

Feeling good: UCAR wins local award for wellness, ergonomics programs

September 23, 2009 | The Boulder County Business Report has honored UCAR with a Health Hero Award. The award recognizes companies and individuals in a variety of health care categories, from emergency workers to administrators. UCAR's award is in the contest's business category, which recognizes an employer's wellness program, healthy work environment, ergonomics program, or other health-related activities. Eligible companies must be in Boulder or Broomfield counties.

Back for 2009: Super Science Saturday, Great World Wide Star Count

September 21, 2009 | EO's annual Halloween-themed science education event, Super Science Saturday, will take place at the Mesa Lab on October 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event, which is aimed at families, students, and teachers, is free and open to the public.

NCAR Library joins open access movement

September 15, 2009 | In early September, UCAR passed the Open Access Policy, heralding in a new era of community access to our scholarship. Under the new procedures, all UCAR authors who publish peer-reviewed articles or other scholarly materials will deposit final versions in an NCAR Library repository known as OpenSky.

New initiative to nurture technology innovation

September 11, 2009 | A new NCAR initiative, Technology Innovation Forum (TIF), is poised to take off this fall. Co-chairs Dirk Richter and Scott Spuler (both EOL) will present more details and solicit feedback on October 8 at 10 a.m. in the FL2 Auditorium. A website is currently in the works.

NCAR reaches out to the media with journalism fellowship

August 17, 2009 | Nine eager journalists will arrive at NCAR on August 17 for the second annual NCAR Journalism Fellowship. The week-long, residential program is a whirlwind tour of the atmospheric and Earth systems sciences, covering everything from climate modeling to cyberinfrastructure to space weather. Participants will meet scientists, tour the supercomputer room, check out the design and fabrication lab, drop in on other Boulder labs, and attend a variety of receptions and seminars.
