September 19, 2012 | NCAR and UCAR staff were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of a longtime colleague, Jo Hansen, on September 17. Colleagues who knew her well shared this remembrance with me. —Roger Wakimoto, NCAR director
Jo began working in NCAR's Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division in 1990 as an administrative assistant. She took a position in UCAR's Unidata program in 1995 and became a writer/editor, working closely with management and the university community on governance activities. Jo was very involved and a valued member of the Unidata program.
After leaving Unidata in 2010, Jo worked part-time in MMM as a writing assistant, working mainly with nonnative English speakers.
Jo was dearly loved by many people throughout the organization. She was a quintessential volunteer and mentor. Recently, she was honored by the SOARS program for her 10 years as a writing mentor. In addition to serving UCAR in many capacities, Jo served her community in many ways, including assisting the elderly and bedridden through her church activities.
Jo was known for her passion and tenacity and for never just taking things at face value. She endeavored to make everything and everyone that she touched better. Her words were direct, honest, and impactful.
Jo was immensely proud of her three children and their spouses. She spoke often of them, always with great pride, but her crowning glory was her six grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by them and by those of us who had the great honor of knowing her.
Memorial services will be held this Friday, September 21, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1419 Pine Street, Boulder.
