September 1, 2011 | Staff convened at the Mesa Lab on August 26 to cheer on co-workers in the annual Up-the-Hill Races and enjoy food and drinks on the Tree Plaza.
The bike race was first, with riders enjoying the smooth new surface on the Mesa Road. Rory Kelly (CISL) set a new course record in the men’s race, finishing in 4:43. He was followed by Ben Sanderson (NESL/CGD) in second at 5:21, and John Weatherly (DLS) in third at 6:01. Rosie Fisher (NESL/CGD) won the women’s race in 6:53, followed by Jen Kay (NESL/CGD) in 8:27, and Becky Ruttenberg (RAL) in 11:04.
Next came the runners, who benefited from cloud cover during their race. Rosie Fisher (NESL/CGD) cruised in first among the women in 11:00, followed by Mary Beth Reece (DLS) in 12:59, and Mireia Mateu (NESL/ACD) in 13:04. Tobias Wegner (NESL/ACD took the men’s race in 9:13, with Alfred de Wijn (HAO) in second at 9:30, and Ben Sanderson (NESL/CGD) in third at 9:52.
After the races, staff lingered at an Oktoberfest-style feast on the Tree Plaza, complete with German sausages and cheeses, sauerkraut, apple strudel, and a live polka band. The party was sponsored by the Employee Activities Council.
