June 19, 2012 | Planning for the next NCAR strategic plan is underway and NCAR director Roger Wakimoto wants broad input from staff and organizational stakeholders.
"Defining the process for creating the next NCAR Strategic Plan is critically important,” says Roger. “It must be a grass roots effort that engages both our staff and the broader community.
“The question I’m asking of everyone is, as we look to the future, what should the highest scientific priority for NCAR be? Help us answer this question."
The plan, due for completion in late summer or early fall 2013, will drive NCAR's strategic priorities for the next 5 to 10 years.
Roger is spending the summer canvassing staff, including meeting with the Early Career Scientist Assembly (ECSA) and the NCAR Scientists Assembly (NSA) and discussing the planning process at town halls and meetings with labs and the observatory.
Peter Backlund, Director of NCAR External Relations and the Integrated Science Program for NCAR, is co-chairing the strategic planning committee and seeking representatives from labs and divisions.
Discussions are also underway with the Board of Trustees, the President’s Advisory Committee on University Relations (PACUR), and the National Science Foundation.
A major focus of the upcoming UCAR Members Meeting in October will be the plan. “We are scheduling breakout sessions to be jointly attended by university faculty and our scientific, technical, and administrative staff,” says Roger.
