May 25, 2012 | Experience the thrill of the chase from your desktop as scientists and observing experts from NCAR (EOL, NESL/ACD, and NESL/MMM) and a host of other labs and universities pursue thunderstorms in Alabama, Colorado, and Oklahoma on the DC3 field campaign during May and June. Scientists involved in the Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry experiment, or DC3, are blogging, tweeting and posting observations and photos from the field until the end of June.

May 16, 2012 | A rainy afternoon didn’t keep staff from celebrating the Spring Fling on Friday, May 11. The annual all-staff party, held indoors at Center Green, featured a new event: the UCAR Olympics. (See slideshow.)
May 10, 2012 | On May 1, Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colorado) and his state policy director, Becca Montgomery, visited the Mesa Lab. After being greeted by Tom Bogdan and Roger Wakimoto, they proceeded on a whirlwind tour of the organization. The visitors were briefed by researchers on everything from applied science to climate modeling, beetle kill, and solar eruptions. Bennet also met with management to discuss funding for fiscal year 2013.

May 9, 2012 | In early May, UCAR’s Measuring Up conference brought more than 150 attendees to Center Green. This year’s theme was “Outside the Box! Why Innovation Is More Crucial in Challenging Times.”

April 16, 2012 |As a property assistant in F&A's Budget & Finance office, Chris Knoetgen got used to seeing a steady stream of used desktop computers, laptops, and other office technology headed for the recycling bin. "It's great that everything gets recycled, but I would see computers that were still usable and think to myself, 'Hey, why can't our schools use some of this?'"

March 16, 2012 | Nathan Hearn (CISL) passed away after a long illness on February 14. In his three years at NCAR, Nathan touched the lives of his coworkers with his personable manner and professional skills. “Nathan will be sorely missed,” said Al Kellie, CISL director. “Those of us who had the privilege to work with him during his brief tenure here will recall the pleasant way he had about him—his kindness, helpfulness, and the contributions he made.”

March 5, 2012 | The Foothills branch of the NCAR Library has lost its familiar face and driving force with the passing of Leslie Forehand, who died on February 16 after battling ovarian cancer.

February 22, 2012 | On February 7, approximately 60 staff gathered at the Mesa Lab to watch eight 5-minute presentations on forward-thinking ideas involving science communications and education. The presenters covered ground from whether the Internet is destabilizing society to how to create a mobile app. (Watch a video of the presentations.)

February 16, 2012 | On January 16, the UCAR community was saddened to hear that Andy Tasker, director of the GLOBE Program, passed away after a brief illness. “We will always remember Andy for his humor, his joie de vivre and for his immense courage,” wrote the GLOBE staff in a letter to Andy’s family. “While only with us at GLOBE for a brief stay, he made an unforgettable impression and has left behind a remarkable legacy.”
