In January 2012, NCAR became a member of the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), joining other UCP ESIP members including Unidata, GLOBE, and DLESE. ESIP is an open networked community of over 120 organizations that bring together science, data and information technology researchers and practitioners. ESIP provides an open opportunity for any interested UCAR/NCAR individuals to get involved with working groups and clusters on a variety of data and information topics such as data formats and standards, data discovery, curation and preservation, geospatial data and information, visualization and developing the science data information profession.
ESIP holds two annual meetings that bring together individuals from member organizations to present new work, discuss current collaborations, and start new projects. Many of NSF's larger data initiatives such as EarthCube, have received extensive attention at these meetings. NCAR staff have participated in previous ESIP meetings in Washington, D.C. and Madison, Wisconsin, and we are encouraging interested individuals to participate at the next ESIP meeting, July 9-12, 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Early registration takes place through May 31st and the site for the summer meeting can be found at http://esipfed.org/meetings?utm_source=ESIP+Update&utm_campaign=369ffd908f-ESIP_Update1_21_2013&utm_medium=email
