Emergency Actions Defined

What to do in case of emergency

You may be instructed to take one of the following actions:

Evacuate
Leave the building for an outside area or predetermined evacuation site. Notify security if you know of a staff member or visitor who may require assistance to evacuate.

Shelter in Place
Remain in the building to permit emergency vehicles to arrive. This action, often a temporary measure, would be used for example at the Mesa Lab to keep the mesa road clear for emergency vehicles. Monitor phones and email and await further instruction from UCAR and/or local authorities.

Lockout
A threatening situation exists outside the building. Exterior doors are locked and secured by UCAR and/or local authorities. Monitor phones and email and await further instruction from UCAR and/or local authorities.

Lockdown
A threatening situation exists inside the building. Go to a room with a door, ideally one that locks. Turn off all lights, set mobile phones to vibrate only, and remain quiet and out of sight. Monitor phones and email if possible and await further instruction. Do not leave the locked room until you have received the “all clear” from UCAR or local authorities.
