The risk of floods is expected to grow markedly due to an increase in extreme weather events and rising sea levels over the next several decades. NCAR scientists and their colleagues are developing flood forecasting and early warning capabilities to address these risks, particularly in developing countries that experience significant loss of life and property due to flooding. For example, NCAR worked for nearly a decade on the Climate Forecasting Applications project for Bangladesh led by Georgia Tech, with support from USAID and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre. In 2007 the project provided 7-10 day forecasts of severe flooding potential in the Brahmaputra River floodplain, enabling the timely evacuation of thousands of local people and their livestock.
