The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research is a consortium of more than 100 member colleges and universities focused on research and training in the atmospheric and related Earth system sciences. These members set directions and priorities for the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which UCAR manages with sponsorship by the National Science Foundation. Through the UCAR Community Programs, UCAR provides innovative services in support of the consortium's education and research goals.
The National Center for Atmospheric Research is a federally funded research and development center devoted to service, research and education in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR’s mission is to understand the behavior of the atmosphere and related physical, biological and social systems; to support, enhance and extend the capabilities of the university community and the broader scientific community, nationally and internationally; and to foster transfer of knowledge and technology for the betterment of life on Earth. The National Science Foundation is NCAR's primary sponsor, with significant additional support provided by other U.S. government agencies, other national governments and the private sector. NCAR is managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research on behalf of UCAR's more than 100 member universities.
The UCAR Community Programs strengthen education, research, and technology in the atmospheric and related sciences through programs and projects that help organize multiagency experiments, support satellite-based Earth and atmospheric monitoring, provide real-time geoscience data for education and research, manage postdoctoral fellowship programs for federal agencies, train operational forecasters and university instructors in the latest meteorological research, provide resources for constructing and organizing digital resources, and related activities.
